The most expensive fish tank we can document is the AquaVista Dinosaur Gold, a limited edition of three built around 2011 and priced at about $4.8 million, with other reports putting it near 3 million pounds. Water, fish and installation were not included. Nothing we found from 2025 or 2026 has displaced it, though no public sale of one has been recorded.
The AquaVista Dinosaur Gold: about $4.8 million
British aquarium maker AquaVista asked designer Stuart Hughes of Liverpool, known for absurdly lavish one-offs, to make something nobody else owned. The result took four months. The frame uses roughly 68 kilograms of solid 24-carat gold. The side panels carry a veneer of woolly mammoth tusk, and a piece of Tyrannosaurus rex bone is shaved into the tusk. The base design looks like a dressed-up version of one of AquaVista’s own acrylic wall tanks.
Only three were planned. Price reports vary: about $4.8 million in some accounts, just under $5 million in others, and 3 million pounds in another. The gold alone was worth around $3.6 million at 2011 prices by one estimate. Gold is far more expensive now, so the metal alone would cost more today.
How we valued it: maker price as reported at launch (2011), not an auction result. We have no record of a resale, so treat the figure as a list price.
What real custom tanks cost
For perspective, here are documented figures for custom home aquariums. They are small next to the gold tank.
- A designer in the Cayman Islands built what he called his priciest tank for a customer in Dallas at about $750,000, reported in 2010.
- A Wisconsin engineer built a home tank of more than 20,000 gallons and estimated the total cost near $500,000.
- A design firm’s breakdown for a very large home tank puts the acrylic sides and glass top alone at about $1.5 million, with site preparation near $198,000. That is a cost estimate, not a completed sale.
