2Jasper Johns
At the age of 85, Jasper Johns is one of the most expensive living American artists.
His early career began with painting flags, maps, targets, letters and numbers, and many of his paintings were used as rebellious gestures.
Therefore, in the 1950s, the contemporary artist gained worldwide recognition.
Jasper Johns is best known for his paintings of flags, and now they became some of the most celebrated masterpieces.
In 1998, the Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased Johns’ white monochromatic version ‘White Flag (1955)’.
During the 1960s and 70s, the artists created over 40 works based on the flag.
One of these, a wax and pigment blend and paper collage on canvas, ‘Flag (1960-1966)’ became Jasper Johns top-selling work at auction when it fetched $28.6 million at Christie’s New York in May 2010.
