5.VH-71 Kestrel: $241 million
Probably the most American looking helicopter embodying what war looks like!
The number five of the most expensive military aircraft was developed and built by the Lockheed Martin–led “US101 Team” of Lockheed Martin Systems Integration, Bell Helicopter and AgustaWestland.
The VH-71 is a variant of the AgustaWestland AW101 and was built to replace the United States Marine Corps’ Marine One.
But in 2009, the Secretary of Defense Robert Gates was asked by President Barack Obama to put the project on hold or cancel it, because of the high costs for the planned 28 helicopters, of about $13 billion.
