The American multi-mission military aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft.
It is the world’s first production tiltrotor aicraft, with one 3-bladed proprotor, turboprop engine and transmission nacelle mounted on each wingtip.
Classified as a powered lift aircraft by the Federal Aviation Administration, the Osprey features 2 Rolls-Royce AE 1107C engine that are connected by drive shafts to a common central gearbox so that 1 engine can power both proprotors if an engine failure occurs.
The plane can be armed with one 7.62 x 51 mm NATO M240 machine gun on the loading ramp.
