The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine aircraft designed by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics.
The F-35 features 3 main models: the F-25A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35B short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) variant, and the F-35C carrier-based Catapult Assisted Take-Off Barrier Arrested Recovery (CATOBAR) variant.
Worth $122 million, the F-35 is descended from the X-35; the winning design of the Joint Strike Fighter program.
It took its first flight on December 15, 2006 and there will be 2.457 of these kind.
There are however some improvements such as durable, low-maintenance stealth technology using structural fiber mat instead of the high-maintenance coatings of legacy stealth platforms.
F-35 has the advantage over the F-22 in basing flexibility and advanced sensors and information fusion.
