3- 1847 Mauritius 2d Blue – $1.6 million
As we said before, the stamps were used by the governor of Mauritius’ wife to invite friends to a ball.
But some have escaped. The so-called partner of 1d Red, this stamp has exactly the same history.
The rare stamps were unknown to the philatelic world until 1864, when the wife of a Bordeaux merchant discovered a 1d and 2d stamp on an envelope belonging to her husband.
That particular envelope has since become one of the most treasured philatelic gems and was known as the Bordeaux Cover.
The owner of one of the finest stamp collection in the world, the famous collector Philipp Von Ferrary has added the cover onto his collection.
