8. Pilar Rossi ($65 million)
8th on our list is the world’s 11th largest sailboat, Pilar Rossi. The size of this boat is 64.35-meter long. However, it was just a 33-meter long motor yacht when Alucraft built it for Formula 1 legend, Nelson Piquet, in 1989.
Then, Nelson’s uncle came into play. Mauricio Piquet was happened to be a naval architect. Alongside Vincenzo Ruggiero and Alberto Mercati, he redesigned Pilar Rossi into a sailing trimaran. They added outriggers and two masts. These special additional features were made by Formula Yacht Spars, England.
The boat’s initial building cost, plus this huge remodeling cost, is estimated to be around $65 million. Had they hired non family members to do the work, that could have gone even higher.
Viviane Piquet, Nelson’s wife, designed Pilar Rossi’s interior. She decorated enough cabins to accommodate up to eighteen guests. Perhaps, Nelson will need that space when he cruises with his seven children.
