3Olympic Stadium – $1.47 billion
First things first. There are 2 Olympic Stadiums, one in London and one in Montreal. We’ll talk about the one located in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district of Montreal, Quebec.
Built in the mid-1970s as the main venue for the 1976 Summer Olympics, the stadium is the largest by seating capacity in Canada (65.255).
Nicknamed ‘The Big Owe’ and ‘The Big O’, a reference to both its name and to the doughnut-shape of the stadium’s roof, the Olympic Stadium became the home of Montreal’s professional baseball and football teams after an artificial turf was installed.
It was built at a total cost of $1.47 billion and it features the Montreal Tower, the world’s tallest inclined tower (175 metres).
Designed by French architect Roger Taillibert, the Olympic’s swimming pool is located under the tower.
The Olympic Stadium features a 101.600-watt public address system, a main room which is the largest in Quebec (43.504 square meters), a yellow seat on the 300 level which commemorates a 534-foot home run by Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
