5Statue of Aphrodite – $18 million
Another statue inspided by the Aprodite of Cnidus was sold for a huge amount of money, in 1988. Bought by the Getty Museum, the 2.400-year-old statue is now back to Sicily, where it belongs.
The beautiful 7-foot tall, 1.300-pound statue of marble and limestone had a huge significance for the museum.
The proposed statue of Aphrodite would not only become the single greatest piece of ancient art in our collection; it would be the greatest piece of Classical sculpture in this country and any country outside of Greece and Great Britain‘, said former antiquities curator, Marion True.
