3. Jasper’s Golden Cannoli ($26,453)
Cannoli is one of classic Italian desserts originated from Palermo, Italy. This dessert has tube-shaped shell made of fried pastry dough. It is filled with a sweet creamy filling. It usually contains ricotta, often mixed with chocolate, candied lemon and orange peel, and nuts.
Originally, cannoli was a signature dessert for the Carnevale. It is a festival season which occurs immediately before Lent. Thanks to Italian immigrants who brought the recipes to United States, cannoli can be found anytime. And today, this street food can be found all over Italy. But the most expensive one can only be found in Kansas City.
Master Italian Chef Jasper Mirabile Jr., the chef and the owner of Jasper’s Restaurant, displayed the most expensive cannoli in the world in his restaurant. It was in September 2011, as an attempt to make September as National Cannoli Month.
The golden cannoli has a rich chocolate base. And it is filled with ricotta cheese, candied lemon, chocolate, and lemon peel. And the shell is covered with edible gold leaf. One thing that really lifted this food’s price to $26,453 was the Italian diamond necklace complementing the pastry. That piece of jewelry was designed by Tom Tivol and worth around $26,000.
