2. GeoCities: $3.6 billion
The second most expensive acquisition by Yahoo!, it was originally founded by David Bohnett and John Rezner in 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet (BHI).
When Yahoo! bought the company, it was the third-most visited website on the internet. And back then the site users could select a “city” in which to place their web pages.
GeoCities was purchased in January 1999, with about $3.6 billion in stock.
In April 2009, the company announced that it would shut down the United States GeoCities service and all the 38 user-built pages on GeoCities.
Now it became Yahoo! GeoCities, a web hosting service, which is now only available in Japan.
