8Carlo Gambino
Next on our top list of the most famous gangsters is another Italian-born American gangster, Carlo Gambino, best known as the boss of the Gambino crime family, still named after him.
In 1960s, the Gambino family had 500 soldiers making the family a $5 million-a-year enterprise.
Born on August 24, 1902, Carlo Gambino was known for being secretive and low-key.
A weird thing, but perhaps not for that era, is that Gambino married his first cousin, Catherine Castellano, and raised 4 children (a daughter Phyllis Sinatra and 3 sons, Thomas, Carlo and Joseph).
Among his activities were included illegal gambling, protection money from merchants and loansharking.
But the irony is that he lived in a modest house in Brooklyn and the only thing that showed he had losts of money was his license plate on his Buick CG1.
Carlo Gambino was the only of the ‘Five Families’ who attended the funeral of the previous mobster, Lucky Luciano.
Carlo died of a heart attack, on January 26, 1969, at Naples International Airport.
And did you know that he was buried 10 years after his death?
