1. Aria Resort & Casino, Las Vegas
Aria opened on December 16, 2009 and was among the most technologically advanced hotels in the world at the time. Its rooms automatically adjust the curtains, switch off unused lights and electronics, and regulate the temperature when a guest enters or leaves.
The resort has 4,004 rooms and suites, which makes the smart-room idea unusually large in scale. MGM Resorts still operates it, while Blackstone bought the property in 2021 as part of a $3.89 billion deal and leases it back to MGM.

2. Yotel New York, New York City
Yotel New York opened on June 13, 2011 at 570 10th Avenue, with 669 compact rooms of about 16 square meters each. Its signature is Yobot, a robotic luggage concierge that stores bags in one of 150 bins.
Guests check in at self-service kiosks in the lobby. The hotel’s own page describes Yobot in the present tense, so the robot is still part of the experience.
3. Eccleston Square Hotel, London
This 39-room boutique hotel sits in a Grade II listed Georgian townhouse at 37 Eccleston Square. A one-year renovation costing £6.5 million reopened it in August 2011, and six months later it won the In-Room Technology Innovation award at the European Hospitality Awards.
The hotel is a member of Design Hotels and booking sites still list it for 2026 stays. At launch, coverage described touch-sensitive controls for lighting and music and an in-room iPad acting as a concierge. Which of those exact features survive in the rooms now is unclear, so ask before you book.
4. Park Hyatt Shanghai, Shanghai
Park Hyatt Shanghai has 174 rooms and suites on the 79th to 93rd floors of the Shanghai World Financial Center. When it was completed it was the highest hotel in the world, and it is now the third-highest.
The rooms were designed by Tony Chi and opened in 2008. Reports from its early years describe heated bathroom floors and a Japanese-style toilet that greets the guest, a detail that always raises the question of whether it comes with the world’s most expensive toilet paper. It does not, as far as we know.
5. theWit, Chicago
theWit is a Hilton-branded hotel at 201 N State Street in the Loop. It has 310 rooms, including 36 suites, and finished a hotel-wide renovation and redesign in 2023.
When it opened as a tech-forward hotel, it described an IP network linking rooms, elevators and the front desk, plus sensors that adjust heating and cooling. The 2023 redesign may have changed the room technology, so treat those launch features as the idea behind the hotel and confirm the current setup.
6. W Taipei, Taipei
W Taipei has 405 rooms on the 8th to 31st floors of the Taipei City Hall Bus Station building in the Xinyi district. It began trial operations in February 2011 and officially opened in March 2011, and is owned by Uni-President.
The hotel is built around entertainment technology, with the WET pool, WOOBAR and a WIRED business center. Exterior design came from Tadashi Yamane and the interiors from GA Design.
7. The Peninsula Tokyo, Tokyo
The Peninsula Tokyo is a 24-story hotel in Yurakucho, Chiyoda, and the only Peninsula-branded hotel in Japan. It is owned by Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels.
Coverage from its opening years described internet radio, mood lighting controls and Wi-Fi phones in the rooms. The current in-room setup is unchecked, so treat those as launch features.
8. citizenM, multiple cities
citizenM is new to this list. The Dutch brand opened its first hotel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in 2008 and now runs 37 hotels in 20 cities. Marriott International agreed to buy it for $355 million in April 2025 and completed the purchase on July 23, 2025.
As of 2013, each room had a Samsung tablet providing a music library and free video on demand, and the brand has built its identity on compact, tech-first rooms. Features vary by location, so check the property you plan to visit.
9. QT Sydney, Sydney
QT Hotels & Resorts launched in 2011 and is part of the EVT group, which also owns Rydges. The Sydney hotel became known for its use of art and for elevators that, according to launch coverage, chose a song based on how many people were inside.
The QT brand is known for blending art into the building. Whether the elevator music still plays is unchecked, so treat it as a fun extra rather than a reason to book.
10. Mama Shelter, Paris
Mama Shelter is a design-led budget brand with interiors by Philippe Starck. Accor bought a 35 percent stake in 2014, when the brand had five hotels.
At launch the Paris hotel put a large iMac in every room that worked as TV, radio and internet access. The rooms are modest in price compared with the rest of this list, which is why it sits last.
Gone or changed since the original list
These entries from the old version no longer fit.
- Henn na Hotel, Huis Ten Bosch, Japan: the hotel opened in July 2015 with 144 rooms and 186 robot staff, and Guinness World Records recognized it as the first robot-staffed hotel. After a change in shareholders it was refitted as Hotel Rotterdam, which reopened in October 2023.
- Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel, Spain: the hotel and club combination still exists, with 415 rooms across the Club and Tower buildings. We dropped it because the fingerprint payment and social-login totems from the old article are dated claims we could not confirm.
