As you may know, Sapporo is the 4th-largest city in Japan by population and the largest city on the island of Hokkaido.
For foreigners, Sapporo is known for having hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, the first ever held in Asia.
Also, the city is home to Sapporo Brewery, to those famous white chocolate biscuits called ‘shiroi koibito’ (meaning ‘white sweetheart’) and to 3 3-star Michelin restaurants (Nukumi, French restaurant Moliere and Sushi Tanabe).
So why this appears in our top list of ‘snowy’ destinations? When it’s enough snow lining the streets, Sapporo holds the Sapporo Snow Festival.
The first one was held in 1950.
The Odori Park and the streets around the Susukino neighborhood are filled with ice carvings and sculptures made of snow. Again, something worth seeing!
