What it is
The villa sits on the north-facing hillside of Barvikha, a town west of Moscow. Construction began in 2006. It is a piece of neofuturist architecture: a lower body set into the slope that holds the shared living and dining spaces, and an upper volume about 22 meters high that rises out of it and looks out over the pines and birches. From a distance it reads like a docked spacecraft, which is where the nickname comes from.

Early descriptions of the interior, which we could not check against a current source, put the living room, a gym, a massage room, a sauna and a Russian bath on the lowest level. A library, a large hall, a guest room and a children’s room are described on the third level, and bedrooms and a big terrace on the top. The design was said to draw on Antoni Gaudi in its rejection of straight lines, with glass and wood used inside.
