Pelé is a retired Brazilian professional footballer and his current net worth is $115 million.
Born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento, he used to play as a forward, but now he retired.
He is the son and the elder child of three, of Fluminense footballer Dondinho and Celeste Arantes.
Edson comes after the American inventor Thomas Edison, with his nickname originally being Dico, given by his family.
His nickname Pele came during his school days when he used to mispronounce the name of his favorite player, local Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Bile.
Growing up in poverty in Bauru in the State of São Paulo, he used to work in tea shops as a servant to earn some extra money.
His father taught him to play football, and he could not afford a proper football and used to play with either a sock stuffed with newspaper or a grapefruit.
During his teenage years he used to play for amateur teams such as Sete de Setembro, Canto do Rio, São Paulinho, and Amériquinha.
Thanks to him the Bauru Athletic Club juniors entered to three consecutive state youth championships.
In 1956 he made his senior team debut at the age of 15, against Corinthians Santo Andre (pt), performing impeccably.
Ten months after he signing professionally, and given a place in the first team, he qualified for the Brazil national team.
Famous European clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United tried to sign him after the 1962 World Cup.
However, the government of Brazil made him an official national treasure, which prevented the European clubs to transfer him out of the country.
In 1958 he won his first major title with Santos as a team and won the Campeonato Paulista.
During that time, he finished the tournament as top scorer with 58 goals, a record that still stands today.
Wearing his number 10 shirt, Pelé produced one of the best performances of his career. He scored a hat-trick in Lisbon, which allowed Santos to win 5–2.
Today, he is widely regarded as the greatest football player of all time. In 1961, Brazil President Jânio Quadros had Pelé declared a national treasure.
According to the IFFHS, Pelé is the most successful league goal-scorer in the world, scoring 1281 goals in 1363 games.
