Born in London as the eldest of three children of Eve Branson, a former ballet dancer and air hostess, and Edward James Branson, a barrister, he has two younger sisters.

Growing up, he attended Scaitcliffe School, a prep school in Berkshire, before attending Cliff View House School in Sussex.

He also went to Stowe School, an independent school in Buckinghamshire until he turned 16 years old.

Virgin Records signed controversial bands as the Sex Pistols, which other companies refused to sign.

The record label went on and signed famous artists such as the Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel, UB40, Steve Winwood, and Paula Abdul.

Thanks to the contracts they signed, it became the world’s largest independent record label.

After selling Virgin Records and a brief break he started Virgin Atlantic Airways, as well as launching Virgin Mobile and Virgin Blue, in 1984, 1999 and 2000.

Virgin bought European short-haul airline Euro Belgian Airlines in 1996 and renamed it Virgin Express. In 2006 the airline merged with SN Brussels Airlines and formed Brussels Airlines.
