What was Poseidon Undersea Resort?
The concept was a luxury hotel on the sea floor: the world’s first permanent one-atmosphere seafloor structure, meaning guests stay at normal air pressure inside it. The project was conceived by L. Bruce Jones. He offered a $10,000 reward for the best location, tried a reef off Eleuthera in the Bahamas, and moved on to Fiji after a year of failed negotiations.
The deal was made with the owner of a privately owned 225-acre island in northeastern Fiji, Katafanga Island. The island is a former volcano turned coconut plantation, ringed by palm trees and home to birds, dolphins and sea turtles.
What was planned?
The underwater resort was to have twenty-four 550-square-foot guest rooms, an underwater restaurant and bar, a library, a conference room, a wedding chapel, a spa and a 1,200-square-foot luxury suite. Above water, the plan called for 48 villas with private splash pools, a tennis court, a fitness center and an executive golf course. Guests could pilot their own Triton submarine through the lagoon, scuba dive and take spa treatments.
Is Poseidon Undersea Resort open?
We found no confirmation that it was ever completed. The earlier version of this article said it was under construction, but that was a statement from years ago and we cannot support it. Treat the resort as a concept that did not open, and do not book anything based on its old price list. If you want to stay under the sea, look for a currently operating underwater hotel and ask for its present rates.
