Ralph Lauren RL Automotive Skeleton Watch Inspired By Bugatti
The Ralph Lauren RL Automotive Skeleton Watch was inspired by vintage 1938 Bugatti.
For those who don’t know, Ralph Lauren is an American fashion designer, philanthropist and business executive. He is mostly known for his clothing company and his collection of rare automobiles.
As of January 2015, Forbes estimates his wealth at $8 billion, which makes Ralph Lauren the 155th richest person in the world.
Beyond Ralph Lauren’s work as a visionary in fashion, the designer has a remarkable collection of automotive artifacts.
Everybody knows how much Ralph Lauren loves his cars, especially the 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe, so this time was just another excuse to showcase his car.
With the release of the watch collection, Ralph Lauren found the perfect way to put all that love he has for the car in something he loves doing- designing.
The Ralph Lauren Sporting Automotive Flying Tourbillon was introduced to the world at the 2014 SIHH in Geneva and this year he launched the Ralph Lauren RL Automotive Skeleton, another amazing timepiece.
The ‘automotive collection’, is collection of timepieces which demonstrates the connection between two worlds: watchmaking and antique automobiles.
Just like with the previous example, this RL Automotive Skeleton design was also inspired by the instrument panel of the $40 million vintage Bugatti.
This one, however, has more prominent design elements which were borrowed for this watch such as its ring of Amboyna burl wood made bezel.
The reason they used wood is because back in the 1930s, using wood on instrument panels of luxury cars was a common thing to do.
The matte black galvanic Azure made skeleton dial features at 6 o’clock seconds sub-dial and at 12 o’clock a black subdial with RL logo in beige.
Its sword-shaped, black oxidized hour and minute hands are coated with brassy Super-LumiNova, in addition to making the dial beautiful it also makes it easy to read in the dark.
Being a skeleton, workings of the movement is visible from the front and the back.
The Swiss manual-wind IWC movement inside is capable of providing 45 hours of power reserve and 18,000 vph in frequency.
Just like hands, the steel and brass made gear train and the large balance oscillating are coated with Super-LumiNova. Also, the watch features an open-worked, hand-wound RL1967 movement.
Its strap is made from black alligator with black Alsavel lining and has a black shot-blasted stainless steel pin buckle.
We don’t know yet how much the Ralph Lauren RL Automotive Skeleton watch is going to cost, but of what we heard from those who are good at pricing these kinds of things, we are looking at $35,000.
