#5: James Madison – $100 million
The fourth President of the United States (1809-1817), James Madison was an American statesman, and political theorist.
He was the author of the United States Bill of Rights as well as the “Father of the Constitution” because he was instrumental in the drafting of the United States Constitution.
Unlike the other presidents, he served as a politician most of his adult life.
After the Constitution, Madison became one of the leaders in the movement to ratify it.
Like most of his competitors he changed his political views many times during his life.
During the drafting and ratification of the constitution, he favored a strong national government, though later he grew to favor stronger state governments.
As president, after the failure of diplomatic protests and a trade embargo against Great Britain, he led the nation into the War of 1812.
