The Russian figure skater Evgeni Viktorovich Plushenko is a 4-time Olympic medalist (2006 gold, 2014 team gold, 2002 and 2010 silver), a 3-time World Champion (2001, 2003, 2004), a 7-time European Champion, (2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2012), a 4-time Grand Prix Final Champion (1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2002-2003, 2004-2005) and a 10-time Russian national champion (1999-2002, 2004-2006, 2010, 2012-2013).
He began skating before he started kindergarten and showed potential very quickly.
By his early teens, he became the youngest World Junior Champion and World medalist.
In 2006, he joined the political party A Just Russia and, a year later, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg.
Known as a powerful skater, Plushenko’s return to the 2014 Olympics was highly anticipated.
Due to his injuries over the past few years, he was forced to withdraw from the singles competition while at the Olympics and announced his retirement from competitive skating later that day.
