Swedish defensive player, Nicklas Lidstrom, played a remarkable 20 seasons in the NHL, sticking with the Detroit Red Wings throughout his long career.
Lidstrom has won four Stanley Cups, captained the Red Wings for six seasons, and received the Conn Smythe Trophy seven times – he is considered to be one of the greatest defensive players in the history of the NHL.
Apparently considering retirement a number of times before finally committing to it, the main reason he delayed it was that he was offered increasingly large contracts, culminating in a one-year $6.2 million deal in 2011.
