Richardson played football for Baltimore Colts in NFL for one year only, from 1959 to 1960. But the Colts became the NFL champion that year.
However, it seems like entrepreneurship has been in Richardson’s mind from the start. He used the money he earned from winning that championship to build the first Hardee’s franchise. Now, there are more than 3,000 Hardee’s scattered all over the country.
He returned to football in 1995 to found his own team, Carolina Panthers. He became the principal owner then until today.
Richardson is also known as the ‘Big Cat’, a nickname that was given to him due to his connection to the team. He had never missed a Panthers home game until he was hospitalized in 2008. He received a new heart one year later.
