Born on July 2, 1979, Joseph Eric Thornton is a Canadian professional ice hockey centreman and alternate captain for the San Jose Sharks.

He played for the St. Thomas Travelers and also played for the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs in the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario, as well as for the St. Thomas Stars and Barrie Colts, and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

The player was drafted #1 overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL Draft and played for HC Davos in the Swiss National League.

He re-signed with the Boston Bruins for a 3-year deal worth $20 million. In 2006, Joe Thornton won the Hart Memorial Trophy for MVP and Art Ross Trophy.

The NHL player also won Gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics, 2004 World Cup and 1997 World Junior Championships.
