John Gandel was born in 1935 in Australia. He is the son of Sam and Fay Gandel and he was educated at Melbourne High School.
His parents were the founders of Sussan women’s clothing chain. John Gandel inherited much of its wealth and in 1954 took control of his parents’ women’s clothing business and grew it into a chain of over 200 stores.
In 1983 he sold the clothing business chain to his brother-in-law and bought the Chadstone Shopping Centre, a regional shopping centre located in Melbourne and started to focus more on real estate.
John Gandel in 2011 donated $1 million to fight the devastating bushfires in Victoria and $7.5 million to the National Gallery of Australia.
