The 5th richest Greek billionaire is Philip Niarchos, the oldest son of the late Stavros, one of the world’s richest shipping magnates who held a business battle with Aristotle Onassis.
Now the Niarchos clan sure has an interesting drama story worthy of a film; from love triangles to private islands to drug overdoses and even accusations of murder.
The billionaire inherited the bulk of his father’s art collection, which includes some of the world’s most recognizable pieces by some of the most important names.
Also, the collection is the largest private collection of Van Goghs, including a self portrait of the painter after having chopped off his own ear.
It is said that in 1982, Philip Niarchos bought a self-portrait for a then-record of $3.3 million, made by Haitian-American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Today, the artist’s work sets global records, including ‘Dustheads’, which was sold at Christie’s in 2013 for a large amount of money.
