1. Amancio Ortega – $62.9 billion
We’ve talked about him being one of the richest billionaires in the world.
And the richest man in Europe is Amancio Ortega, the richest retailer. He added to his fortune $7 billion this past year, and his net worth in 2014 is estimated at 62.9 billion.
How he makes all that money? Though he stepped down as chairman of Inditex (the company he owned who was better known for its Zara brand), in 2011, he still owns almost 60% of its shares.
Ortega also has a growing real estate portfolio, estimated to be worth nearly $5 billion, much of it acquired at bargain prices during the financial downturn.
He is reportedly planning to list his property holdings in a real estate investment trust.
Among his properties: the iconic Torre Picasso, a 43-story skyscraper in Madrid (Google is a tenant).
