Gianluigi and Rafaela met when he was a ferry ship captain and in 1970 they took the decision to launch their own cargo shipping venture, Mediterranean Shipping, now known as MSC.
Soon, MSC became the second-largest container shipping line in the world. They also own the fourth largest cruise company, MSC Cruise.
Gianluigi takes care of the management, while Rafaela is in charge of designing the ships’ interiors.
In 2009, at the Teatro di San Carlo of Naples, he received the prize for “Neapolitan Excellence in the World” from Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
