The Spacecraft Batman

The Swiss brand Romain Jerome launched the Spacecraft Batman for watch fans and Batman fans, the result of a partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products. It mixes the sleek menace of Gotham City with a space-age design, in the brand’s Batman series. The earlier Batman project had the same case, but not the blue and black color combination that gives this one its Dark Knight look.

The case is titanium with a black PVD finish that mirrors the Batmobile, with angular cladding and a hand-applied brushed finish. Time is read in a linear display on the trapeze-shaped case: the hours in iridescent blue, and the minutes on a black disk with a blue cursor on the case top. Reportedly it was the first Romain Jerome watch with a logo engraved on it, and the Bat-signal is engraved on the facets of the case. A close look shows the case’s edgy shape, a brand trademark.

What powers it?

A self-winding mechanical movement. The time display was developed for the brand by Agenhor, and it gives lateral, linear, jumping and retrograde indications on a Sellita automatic base with a 38-hour power reserve. The strap is black buffalo leather stitched in blue, just like the Caped Crusader’s colors.

Price, rarity and the brand today

Only 75 were made, at a launch price of US$32,950. That is serious money for a Batman watch. The brand was later renamed RJ and filed for bankruptcy in Switzerland in February 2020 after its majority shareholder stopped funding it, with no buyer found in time. If you want a Spacecraft Batman today, you will most likely find it on the pre-owned market. One dealer listing we saw gave a catalog price of CHF 30,950 for a pre-owned example, which is a listing figure and not a sale price. Check availability and condition yourself before buying.
