1. Twin Farms: Barnard, Vermont
Twin Farms is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort made up of themed cottages, each with its own porch and fireplace or hot tub. The price covers meals, fine wines and spirits, and activities from hiking and fly fishing to skiing on private trails in winter.
It was named among the top readers’ picks for romantic hotels in 2025, and one 2019 survey ranked it fifth most expensive in the nation.

2. Post Ranch Inn: Big Sur, California
Post Ranch Inn is a cliff-top retreat with buildings that are cantilevered over the Pacific, set at angles around the trees and made with reclaimed wood and glass. It is a favourite for proposals.
A booking-site listing showed rooms at about $2,175 a night on a date without a year, so check current rates.

3. Dunton Hot Springs: Colorado
Dunton is a former mining town in the San Juan Mountains with cabins first built by miners in the 1800s. There is no cell phone service, though there is wireless internet, and the all-inclusive rate covers meals, drinks and hot springs access.
The resort also arranges activities such as heli-skiing and spa treatments.
How we valued it: Ranked on seclusion. No rate is quoted because it is available only on request.
4. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai: Kona, Hawaii
Hualalai sits on black lava flows beside the sea. The King’s Pool, a lagoon-style pool carved from lava rock, is home to thousands of fish, and whales can be seen from the shore from about November to May.
Traditional Hawaiian activities such as canoe paddling and surfing lessons are on offer.

5. Hotel Bel-Air: Los Angeles, California
Hotel Bel-Air has hosted film stars, presidents and royalty since opening in 1946. Rooms are spread through gardens around a swan lake, which keeps things private.

6. Enchantment Resort: Sedona, Arizona
Enchantment sits in a red-rock canyon near Sedona, with 218 casita rooms and suites. Guests have access to the Mii amo destination spa, which was named a top destination spa for 2025 in a major travel awards list.
Hiking the vortex sites and Jeep tours are popular add-ons.

7. Rosewood Miramar Beach: Montecito, California

8. Windsor Court Hotel: New Orleans, Louisiana

Baccarat Hotel New York was also among the 2025 readers’ choice winners for romantic hotels. Its crystal-lit lobby and spa suit a city weekend.

Not in the United States: moved off the list
Our earlier list included three hotels that are outside the US: Fairmont Banff Springs in Alberta, Canada, Jade Mountain in St. Lucia, and Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Los Cabos, Mexico. They are still romantic stays, but they do not belong in a list of American hotels. Banff Springs, nicknamed the Castle in the Rockies, was built for tourism by the railway, and Jade Mountain faces the Pitons with infinity-pool suites.
