Russian Billionaire Will Fund $100m Search for Alien Life

Yuri Milner, a Russian billionaire will fund $100m search for alien life.

The Russian tech billionaire has a net worth of $3.3 billion and is one of a few people in the world who can afford to spend $100 million on a search for alien life.

Yuri Milner, who was named after the legendary Russian cosmonaut and the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, is really serious about his project.

His project is a partnership with Dr. Stephen Hawking and several other scientists. Because NASA doesn’t really devote much in the way of resources to look for aliens, we see Milner’s search to be extremely helpful.

Thanks to Milner and his team, that is going to change. The search will now have all the resources it needs. This project is called Breakthrough Listen.

It was unveiled several weeks ago, and we have the statement from Milner on the project and its approach to be problem of seeking alien life.

“We’re committed to bringing the Silicon Valley approach to the search for intelligent life in the universe. Our approach to data will be open and taking advantage of the problem-solving power of social networks.”

The idea or reaching and searching for aliens might be a bit terrifying for some, but for others is a total delight.

Milner wants to use a system developed at the University of California at Berkeley known as a ‘screen saver program’. That program uses the processing power of idle computers belonging to individuals in order to look through the massive amounts of data being collected by Breakthrough Listen.

This way, unusual signals, possibly of some intelligent origin, can be found much more efficiently than if the project depended on just one standalone supercomputer.

Some of that data collected will be coming from the Automated Planet Finder Telescope at California’s Lick Observatory.

This telescope can be used to find “laser signals” being beamed back and forth by intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

And that’s just only one of the most exciting aspects of Breakthrough Listen, which is a $100 million investment from Milner over the next ten years.

And of course, Milner’s search has come up in newspapers as an ad that speaks about humanity’s existence and the need to search for life in outer space.

It was released to announce the launch of a $100 million project “Breakthrough Listen” that brings together scientists from around the world in the largest ever search for extraterrestrial life.

The project is set to begin making observations in 2016.

What do you think? Are we alone in the Universe or not?
