The Ned is a 252-room hotel and members’ club in the former Midland Bank headquarters at 27 Poultry in the City of London, opened in 2017 by Soho House and Sydell Group. The Grade I listed building was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and built between 1924 and 1929. It was the Midland’s headquarters, then HSBC’s, until the bank moved out.

How did a bank become a hotel?
The Midland Bank grew into one of the largest banks in the world, and Lutyens designed its Poultry headquarters in the 1920s. HSBC absorbed the Midland in 1992 and kept using the building until it moved to Canary Wharf. The empty building was sold and then restored as a hotel named after Lutyens, whose nickname was Ned.
The restoration, a partnership between Soho House and Sydell Group, has drawn praise from architecture critics. The Ned is half hotel, half members’ club, with a banking hall turned into a food hall.
What is inside The Ned?
The old banking hall holds the main restaurants, including Italian, Californian, Japanese and Mexican options, and the original reception rooms keep their 1920s detailing, such as wood paneling. The hotel has a spa, a gym and a Turkish bath.
The members’ club, Ned’s Club, spreads through upstairs lounges and the old basement vault. Reports have long said the original stainless steel safe deposit boxes remain, and that the vault was a model for Fort Knox. We have not verified the Fort Knox claim.
The Lutyens Suite takes over the former bank chairman’s office, a 100 square meter residence with its own private elevator.
