The Chrysalis
Named by its inventor and with a strange form this musical instrument has us thinking that music can be made from many strange looking things.
Combining the functionality of a harp with a soundboard, this strange instrument was made in the mid 70’s.
The model of the instrument was a round Aztec calendar carved in stone and the basic idea of the inventor of the instrument is to replicate a sound where the harp sounds a little bit like the wind blowing.
The Crysalis is a round circular wheel with two wooden sides, each one with strings on it, both of them suspended on a wave like support that allows the wheel to spin in any directions.
With a simple and yet interesting design, combining a technique that, the inventor Chris Foster, later explains in one of his books, the strange instrument makes a sound that could be easily confused by a wind played harp.
