This list ranks ten festivals by lineup depth, history and how well they run, using 2026 editions as the reference because 2027 dates are mostly not yet confirmed. Always check the official site before booking. Two festivals from our 2015 list, Decibel in Seattle and Weather in Paris, are gone from the ranking: we found no recent editions of either.

1. Time Warp, Germany
Time Warp began in 1994 in Mannheim and is still the festival we would send a first-timer to. It runs overnight across several floors in the Maimarkthalle.
The 2026 edition took place on March 21. From 2026 there is a single spring edition in Germany with no autumn edition, and the next Mannheim date is listed as April 3, 2027, with no lineup announced yet. A Madrid edition ran on September 18 and 19, 2026.
2. Sónar, Spain
Sónar started in Barcelona in 1994 as a festival of advanced music and multimedia art, and it still splits into a day programme and a night programme, with the Sónar+D conference alongside.
The 33rd edition ran June 18 to 20, 2026, and for the first time sat on a single site, Fira Gran Via. The lineup was led by The Prodigy, Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens and Boys Noize.
3. Awakenings, Netherlands
Awakenings has moved. The main summer festival now takes place at Beekse Bergen in Hilvarenbeek, not near Amsterdam as in our first list, and the 2026 edition on July 10 to 12 was reported sold out.
A smaller edition, Upclose, ran at Spaarnwoude near Amsterdam on May 16 and 17, 2026.
4. Movement, USA
Movement takes over Hart Plaza in Detroit every Memorial Day weekend, in the home city of techno. The 2026 edition ran May 23 to 25 with more than 115 acts and was the 20th year under its current producers.
Carl Cox, Dom Dolla and Sara Landry led the bill, with Richie Hawtin, Green Velvet and Carl Craig also on it. The city declared an official Detroit Techno Week around it.
5. Dekmantel, Netherlands
Dekmantel launched in 2013 and is known for deep lineups over big crowds. The 12th edition ran July 29 to August 2, 2026, with more than 160 acts.
Sets were split between the forest stages at Amsterdamse Bos and city venues Melkweg and Paradiso. Ricardo Villalobos, Helena Hauff and Underground Resistance were among the names.
6. Dimensions, Croatia
Dimensions has changed home since our first list, which had it at Fort Punta Christo in Pula. Recent editions are listed at The Garden in Tisno, and the 2026 edition ran August 27 to 31.
Helena Hauff, Satoshi Tomiie and Sonja Moonear were announced for 2026. It focuses on house, techno, electro and breaks.
7. NEOPOP, Portugal
NEOPOP is a newcomer to this page. It is held at the Forte de Santiago da Barra in Viana do Castelo, and the 2026 edition on August 6 to 8 marked its 20th anniversary, billed under the original ANTIPOP name.
Jeff Mills, Ben Klock b2b Rødhåd and Helena Hauff b2b IMOGEN were on the bill, with Laurent Garnier closing.
8. Unsound, Poland
Unsound started in Kraków in 2003 and is a festival of experimental and electronic music. In 2026 it ran as one festival in two cities, Warsaw from October 2 to 6 and Kraków from October 8 to 11, linked by a train on October 7.
The 2026 theme was Soft Power. It also travels to New York and London.
9. Berlin Atonal, Germany
Berlin Atonal was founded in 1982 by Dimitri Hegemann and relaunched in 2013 in a former power plant, now Kraftwerk Berlin. It is as much about sound system and visuals as DJs.
In 2026 it appeared as a joint project with Unsound called The Infinite Now at Kraftwerk, in May, though listings give different dates. A summer 2027 edition has been listed but is not confirmed.
10. MUTEK, Canada
MUTEK in Montréal replaces Decibel as our slot for digital-arts electronic music. The 27th edition ran August 25 to 30, 2026 in the Quartier des Spectacles with close to 120 artists from 28 countries.
It also has a forum with more than 100 speakers.
