How is Texugueira House laid out?
A long wall leans against the terrain on the east side of the site, and the house unfolds from it as three volumes of different scale.
- First block: single-storey, lifted on columns. The covered ground level works as parking or a leisure area, and a painting and music studio sits above with a small terrace.
- Middle block: the social core, with the entrance, the living room and its big window onto the green surroundings, and the kitchen. A barbecue area and garden sit alongside.
- End block: two floors, with two bedrooms below and a master suite above.
The architects describe a closed path that crosses all three volumes. The gaps between blocks are small gardens and living areas that open to the rural surroundings.
Why does it work?
Separating the house into pieces lets each one have its own view, scale and mood, and it keeps the footprint low on a sloped village plot. It reads as playful from outside and calm from inside.
