The Homeless Billionaire: A Modern Day Great Gatsby

The “Homeless Billionaire” is Nicolas Berggruen, a German-American investor who sold his personal homes in the early 2000s and lived in hotels for years while building Berggruen Holdings and, later, the Berggruen Institute think tank. This is the story of how a $250,000 trust fund became a global investment group, and why he now spends much of his money on ideas about governance, capitalism and technology.

Who is Nicolas Berggruen?

Nicolas Berggruen was born in Paris in 1961. His father, Heinz Berggruen, was one of the great art collectors of the twentieth century and a friend of Pablo Picasso. His mother, Bettina Moissi, was a German actress. He was expelled from the Swiss boarding school Le Rosey for sedition after challenging his teachers, then finished his exams in Paris and moved to London and later New York.

He graduated from NYU in 1981 with a degree in finance and international business. Using a trust fund of about $250,000, he began investing in real estate and public stocks. In 1984 he founded Berggruen Holdings, the vehicle through which he has made more than 100 direct control and real estate investments worldwide.

Why “homeless”?

In the early 2000s Berggruen sold off his personal real estate and chose to live as a nomad, moving between hotels and, in his own words, owning little more than what fit in a suitcase. The press dubbed him the “Homeless Billionaire”. He has said the lifestyle kept him focused on work and ideas rather than possessions.

How he built the money

In the mid-1980s he bought distressed property in New York. In 1988 he co-founded the hedge fund Alpha Investment Management with Julio Mario Santo Domingo Jr.; the firm grew to roughly $2 billion under management before the founders reportedly sold it in 2004.

His best-known turnaround was Karstadt. In 2005 he bought the insolvent German department store chain for a symbolic one euro, invested over 65 million euros at the start, and is credited with saving more than 25,000 jobs. After spending roughly 400 million euros in total, he brought the company out of bankruptcy in 2010.

He also ran listed investment vehicles. Freedom Acquisitions (2006) took a stake in the hedge fund group GLG Partners, Liberty Acquisitions bought Pearl Insurance in 2009, and in 2010 Berggruen took a majority stake in the Spanish media group Prisa. In 2011 he launched Justice Holdings with Martin Franklin and Bill Ackman, which raised 900 million pounds and took a 29% stake in Burger King Worldwide in 2012. In the 2000s and 2010s his real estate arm bought buildings in Berlin, Tel Aviv, Istanbul and the American West Coast, and that business became NBP Capital in 2014.

The Berggruen Institute

In 2010 Berggruen put $100 million into the Berggruen Institute, an independent think tank focused on reshaping political and social institutions for the twenty-first century. He added a further $500 million endowment in 2016. The institute’s work spans the transformation of the human (including artificial intelligence), the future of capitalism, the future of democracy, and planetary challenges such as climate.

It also runs fellowships with universities such as Harvard, Oxford and Peking University, a Philosophy and Culture Center, and the annual $1 million Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture. In 2017 he bought a 450-acre site in the Santa Monica Mountains to build a scholars’ campus called Monteverdi. He has also signed the Giving Pledge.

What Aluxers can learn from it

Berggruen can buy talent and research at a scale most people cannot. The transferable idea is the same, though: stack skills, build knowledge and gain an edge by learning faster than the people around you. If you want a structured way to do that, see Learning Mastery.
