What is the Mexico Residence?
The Mexico Residence was designed by Olson Kundig and sits in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Jim Olson is the principal designer. It is a home for a family that likes to entertain on a large scale while keeping a private core.
Olson summed up the plan this way: “The family basically lives in and around one central space.”
Here is how the firm describes it:
” Set on a sandy beach in Mexico, this seasonal vacation home allows its owner to entertain large numbers of friends and family while maintaining a comfortable private space.
A central, two-story gathering space separates the public areas, living, dining, kitchen and catering, from the master suite. An upstairs floor containing bedrooms, bunkrooms, bathrooms, and a kids’ area can be closed off, maintaining an intimate feel. “
How does the house connect to the beach?
The double-height living room opens to the beach through glass pocket doors, and sliding louvered screens give privacy in the evening while letting air through. Stained alder trellises run from outside to inside and filter the strong sun.
” A strong connection between indoors and outdoors is fostered by sliding pocket doors and multiple outdoor living spaces, as well as deep cantilevered overhangs.
Sustainable features include solar thermal panels and natural ventilation. This modern home is influenced by local traditions. “
Outdoors there is a blue-mosaic-tiled pool, terraces off the guest rooms, a poolside fire pit with an L-shaped banquette, an open-air master shower and a rooftop lounge.
Who designed the interiors?
The interiors are by Terry Hunziker Inc, a Seattle interior design firm focused on high-end residential and commercial work. Hunziker stressed comfort, low-maintenance materials and regionally sourced objects and furniture. Natural touches such as palm trees, small ponds and black stone in the bathrooms add to the setting.
