8. His stage name meaning
The Weeknd’s stage name is actually pronounced “the weekend”. The omission of the last “e” was done to avoid trademark issues with the already existing Canadian band, The Weekend.
As mentioned earlier, there has been a dispute between Abel The Weeknd and music producer Jeremy Rose about who actually came up with this stage name idea. Rose insisted that it is the title of his music project which he pitched to Abel (and before that, to another R&B singer).
However, Abel said that the name reflects his status as a high school dropout. It has Ferris Bueller origins. As it was described, “I left one weekend and never came home”, hence the weekend.
Abel was the first one made the stage name public as he posted his music on YouTube under that name. So, controversy and dispute aside, “The Weeknd” caught the attention of music fans and it remains a catchy name attached to him.
