Why is it called the 360 House?
The house has glass on all sides, so the living areas look out in every direction. The brief was to let the sea, the land and the climate lead, so the architects stripped back the exterior architecture. What remains is a thick slab of grassy roof floating above glass walls.
How was it built on such a tight site?
The site is a sensitive coastal forest lot with a road easement, coastal setbacks and a one-story height limit. Bora partly excavated the lower level for the private rooms, which lets the kitchen, dining and living areas sit upstairs with ocean views while staying within the height limits. From the forest drive, only the upper floor is visible. The upper level is reached by a catwalk and a large glass pivot door.
What is inside?
The palette is honed basalt on the floors and kitchen counters, white oak on the walls, ceilings and built-in cabinetry, and blackened steel accents. The desk, cabinetry and beds are custom, and the white oak staircase is carried by one continuous steel frame.
A “home brain” system controls lights, shades, temperature and audio from touchscreens or an iPad. Motorised curtains can be lowered in sections for privacy or glare control. The design keeps light levels low at night for a cocoon-like feel.
