Why People Dumber Than You Are Getting Rich

Intelligence helps when you are building wealth, but it is overrated, and it can be the very thing keeping you broke when it turns into fear of failure and overthinking. The argument made here is that the gap between success and failure is not intelligence but action. People who look less sharp on paper often win because they start, make mistakes and keep going while others are still planning.

The article covers the intelligence myth, the number one reason smart people stall, two skills that fix it and three rules for acting sooner.

1. The intelligence myth

Growing up, everyone hears that being smart is the key to success. The smartest kids are expected to get top grades, attend top schools and do big things. The rest are told life will be tough. The belief sticks, which is why people chase degree after degree, assuming more study means more money.

If intelligence alone made people rich, the wealthiest people would be scientists, doctors and professors. Richard Branson struggled with dyslexia and dropped out of school with terrible grades. At 16 he had no formal education and no clear direction, yet he started a magazine, a record store, a record label, an airline and then a spaceflight company. He is worth billions without being a typical genius.

Nikola Tesla was undeniably a genius. He invented alternating current, the foundation of modern electricity systems, and his patents alone could have made him the richest person ever. He had no business skills and died completely broke. You can read all the books and collect all the degrees, and even genius does not automatically make you rich.

In a weird way, intelligence ends up holding you back most of the time.

2. The number one reason smart people struggle

Picture two people at the entrance of a giant maze, with money, success and freedom waiting at the end. The genius sits down with pen and paper to map the entire route before taking a step. The regular guy just walks in. He bumps into walls, takes wrong turns and runs in circles, but each mistake teaches him to backtrack and try another way. On average, he gets closer and closer to the end. The genius is still at the entrance, sharpening his pencil.

The genius never goes in because he is terrified of a wrong turn or a dead end. When people grow up being told they are smart, smart becomes who they are, so failure is not a setback but an attack on their identity. That is how someone gets straight A’s, a master’s degree, a PhD and a professorship without ever starting a business. Starting is risky, and if it fails, people might decide they were not so smart after all.

Action-takers are not afraid to fail, to look dumb or to be laughed at. They care about reaching the goal, while smart people often want to reach it the smart way. They understand that failure does not define you, and that how you respond does. Intelligence becomes a disadvantage when it only makes you overthink everything. That is called paralysis by analysis.

People who break free have no secret advantage, they have mastered two skills, and the first is execution.

Waiting at the maze entrance is comfortable, and it is also the slowest way to get through. The Alux app breaks starting into 10-minute sessions from real operators, so the next step is always small. A short quiz sets up paths and mentors matched to where you are right now.

3. The action-taker’s advantage

Ideas are like seeds: they have to be planted, watered and nurtured to grow. Ideas are abundant. What separates success from failure is executing them better than anyone else. Jeff Bezos did not invent online shopping, but he did it better than anybody, and that is why Amazon dominates e-commerce.

Everyone has thousands of ideas, from starting a business to writing a book to learning a skill. The useful question is how many of them you act on. A brain the size of Einstein’s does not matter if you never use it for anything.

The biggest misconception is that execution is a personality trait. It is a skill, something you build rather than something you are born with, and anyone can train themselves to be action-oriented.

4. Social intelligence

The second skill is social intelligence. Steve Jobs was not the best engineer at Apple, and he did not build the devices or write the code. He had vision, leadership and the ability to sell his ideas. He convinced some of the world’s best engineers to work for him and made people believe his products were revolutionary. Apple became one of the most valuable companies in the world because he knew how to get people behind his mission.

Wealth is often built on the ability to shape opinion, get people to act and connect with the right people. A higher IQ means you can understand complex information and solve technical problems, and it might earn excellent grades, but it does not guarantee riches. Social intelligence gets people to trust you, work with you and open their wallets for you.

In venture capital, investors do not throw money at spreadsheets. They back founders who sell a vision. Customers do not buy products so much as buy from brands that tell a good story.

Success in any field needs communication, persuasion and leadership, not only technical knowledge.

5. How to stop overthinking and start winning

It comes down to mindset, and the video offers three rules.

  • Stop waiting for the perfect moment. Life has no trial period or money-back guarantee, and you cannot only dip your toes in. Years of theorizing are speculation until you take a real step. Replace ‘what if?’ with ‘what is the next step I can take right now?’ and act on it immediately.
  • Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Every day you write a story without knowing the ending. There is no GPS or step-by-step guide to the person you are meant to be, and mistakes are part of the job.
  • Prioritize people as well as ideas. An idea only holds real power when it reaches real people, which takes vision, leadership and the ability to tell a good story. What counts is not what you say but how it makes people feel.

Action beats intelligence, every single time.

Combine intelligence with action

Intelligence is simply about making the right decision at the right time. The point of the video is not to dismiss it but to stop it from becoming a hiding place. Pair it with execution and with the ability to bring people along, and it starts to pay.

So the question to carry out of this is practical: what is the next step you can take today, and what would it cost you to wait another year?

FAQ

Why do smart people struggle to get rich?

The video says fear of failure is the number one reason. When smart becomes your identity, failing feels like an attack on who you are, so you overthink and never start.

What is paralysis by analysis?

It is when intelligence becomes a disadvantage because it makes you overthink everything. The genius at the maze entrance, planning forever, is the example the video uses.

Is intelligence or action more important for building wealth?

The video argues action. Richard Branson succeeded despite poor grades, while Nikola Tesla, a genius, died broke because he lacked business skills.

Is execution a talent you are born with?

No. The video says execution is a skill you build, not a personality trait, and anyone can train to be action-oriented.

Why does social intelligence matter for making money?

Wealth is often built on shaping opinion, getting people to act and connecting with the right people. Social intelligence gets people to trust you, work with you and buy from you.
