3. Chapecoense Tragedy
Chapecoense football team was writing a fairytale in Brazilian football history. It all began in 2009, when the team first rejoined the Serie D of Brazilian football league. On that re-debut, they managed to finish 3rd in the table and granted themselves a promotion to Serie C.
It took them three seasons to finally get promoted to the Serie B. But it only took them one season to nearly win the Serie B title. Well, by finishing as runner-up, they got a spot at Serie A, and that was all that matters.
Two years ago, they finally got the chance to compete in Copa Sudamericana. It is the ultimate competition among football clubs in the whole South America region. On their debut, they got to quarterfinal stage. And 2016 was supposed to be their first final ever.
That day on November 28th, they were on their way to compete for that final. But the plane carrying the whole players and staff decided to write its own story and ending the fairytale with a nightmare. LaMia Flight 2933 crashed, leaving only six survivors from all 77 passengers. One surviving player, a goalkeeper, had his leg amputated. And another one decided to retire right away from football.
But the worst part was probably to know why it happened. Flight 2933 simply ran out of fuel.
