The very first woman to appear on U.S. coins wasn’t even American, but a Spanish queen.
It happened in 1893 when Queen Isabella of Spain was the first lady to be cast on a U.S. coin. Her face was featured on a commemorative coin, but still.
You’ve seen the first woman to appear on a coin, but how about the first woman to appear on a paper money?
Her name was Lady Martha Washington. She was the first women to appear on paper money. Lady Martha Washington was featured on a $1 Silver Certificate in 1886 and 1981.
Since then, only three other women were featured on circulating money: Sacagawea, Susan B. Anthony and Helen Keller.
The first African-American to appear on a paper money was Booker T. Washington.
