6. Trump won, Slim lost
As you can guess, 2016 is not a good year for Carlos Slim Helu. As Trump became the president elect, his biggest enemies were probably shouting through the roof. His accusation on Slim’s power over New York Times was a bit harsh, but his win hit Carlos even worse.
Just a few days after the presidential election, Carlos lost around $6.5 billion. That’s how hard it hit. Before the election, Carlos has a nice $51.7 billion in his pocket. Then upon Trump’s jaw-dropping victory, it went down to $45.2 billion. And his rank dropped to just 7th richest in the world.
It all happened because of the world’s reaction on Trump winning the presidential election. Mexican currency dropped to its lowest ever in a decade. And Mexico’s stock exchange hit its highest volatility.
Yet somehow, Carlos managed to dig his way out of this. As mentioned before, Carlos closed the year with $50 billion. And now, he has $55.3 billion and ranked the 4th richest in the world.
