12. Mumbai, India ($9.750 per square meter)

If you are a fan of The Big Bang Theory TV series, you might remember when Rajesh Koothrapali said: “Please don’t send me back to India, it’s so crowded! Its like the whole country’s one endless Comic-Con, except everybody is wearing the same costume; Indian guy!”

Well, in Mumbai alone, there are over twelve million of them. Making it the most populous city in India, and the ninth in the world with 53,000 inhabitants per square mile. That is a lot of Rajesh in one area.

This city may not have the best infrastructures in the world, but due to its density, the living cost here is relatively high. Just to rent an apartment here, the fee is around $2,500 per month. And as for the buying price, it is $9,750 per square meter. This means a typical 120-square-meter city apartment in Mumbai costs you around $1.17 million.

“Mumbai is India´s finance center, the economic powerhouse of the nation, heart of the Hindi film industry and the industrial hub of everything from textiles to petrochemicals. Mumbai is the glamour of Bollywood cinema, cricket on the maidans (open grassed areas), bhelpuri (a spicy sweet Mumbai snack) on the beach of Chowpatty, outstanding colonial architecture and red double-decker buses.” – mcgm.gov.in.
