When needing more space, many people are thinking of building an extension to their actual house, rather than building a new one. The advantage of choosing this way is that you can let yourself be creative and build something totally new and interesting, something that your old house is lacking. This project does just that, but somehow succeeds in finding complementary elements between the two houses. It’s a project full of contrasts, where both new and old are celebrated and enhancing each other qualities.
When architect McBride Charles Ryan was asked to build an addition to a double-fronted Edwardian house in Fitzroy North, he came up with this interesting idea, a cloud-shaped house.
The conversion of this Edwardian-era double fronted house utilizes the potential of the existing building by demolishing little, refurbishing the existing rooms, replacing the kitchen and adding a new living room.
McBride Charles Ryan’s work for the house is designed in three parts. This allows for a sequence of distinct and unexpected episodes, with glimpses previewing oncoming spaces and experiences as you move through the home. The spaces within the original structure are largely white in color united by a vibrant carpet that immediately alerts the visitor that this is no ordinary house.
The kitchen is contained by a new structure of a red ‘box’. The kitchen bridges into the new living space and the lap pool is just meters away. The two principal challenges were to maintain the purity of the form and to resolve the sequence between the three distinct spatial qualities.
The new living addition faces due south while allowing controlled north sun into the living area and providing effective cross ventilation. The final space is following the form of a child-like impression of a cloud and it is a playful addition where family and friends can eat and have fun surrounded by the curved form. It is a dramatic interior creation where the walls merge seamlessly with the ceiling and floor, a fun and interesting place to live in.
