3. Benjamin Siegel (1906 – 1947)
Let me stop you right there. Benjamin Siegel is not related to Steven Siegel. Benjamin was known as Bugsy the most infamous and feared gangster of his day.
We mentioned some deadly hit-men from Murder, Inc. earlier on this list. And Bugsy was one of the founders and leaders of that organization. But that is not the only reason why he was so popular, not just among mobsters but also among celebrities.
If you enjoy Las Vegas and all of its luxury casino resorts, ironically you have to thank Bugsy. He was the driving force behind the development of the world-renowned Las Vegas Strip. Now, it is the home to some of the world’s most expensive buildings.
Being one of the Murder, Inc. leaders, Bugsy was responsible for so many murders. But he was tried for only one. He was convicted of murdering one of his own after the man threatened to become a police informant. And Bugsy walked out of the trial as a free man.
Even though he managed to elude the verdict, death found Bugsy in 1947. He was shot to death in his girlfriend’s house. No one has been charged for his murder and the case remains unsolved to date.
