Located on the southern tip of Ross Island, McMurdo Station is a U.S. Antarctic research center and the largest community in Antarctica, with a population of 1.258 residents.
But this number drops dramatically during the winter.
Due to its location and weather, once a year, fuel, supplies and equipment are shipped in by boats operated by the U.S. navy. This operation is called ‘Deep Freeze’.
