7Ascension Island
First discovered in 1501, by Portuguese explorer Joao da Nova, the island is now governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.
This isolated volcanic island is located around 1.600 kilometers from the coast of Africa and 2.250 kilometers from the coast of South America.
Ascension Island is home to an airfiled used by the U.S and U.K. militaries. And thanks to these 2 militaries, the island has now a population of about 880 people.
