Camping was never luxurious until bell tents arrived. You go camping to be closer to nature, but some of us would like a bed, a dresser and a door that closes. Lotus Belle built a business around that idea, and its tents are popular at festivals and pop-up hotels.
The designer behind Lotus Belle
Harriet Seddon grew up camping and drew the first Lotus Belle design at 19, in her first year at design school in South West England. She shelved it while she raised children and worked as a textiles teacher. She later left teaching, showed her designs to a tent manufacturer who imported bell tents, and built a prototype at his factory. The tents reached the market in 2012, and the design was adapted for the Australian and New Zealand markets.
The Outback Deluxe
When it launched in 2015, the Outback Deluxe was an upgrade on the company’s earlier 4 meter and 5 meter models. It is a single-skin tent in a thick cotton and polyester canvas blend with mesh screens, large roof vents, a second door and clear window panels. Space for a bed, a dresser and shelves is not a problem at 5 meters. The biggest change from the original was the back panel: the original had only a mesh window, while the Deluxe has a full-size door, so you can enter and leave from two sides.
The tent erects in as little as 45 minutes, and in 15 to 20 minutes when the poles are already attached to the walls. It packs down into a banana-shaped bag.

At the 2015 launch, a New Atlas report put the Outback Deluxe at about AUD 3,000 (US$2,300). Our earlier version of this article listed the 4 m Outback Deluxe at $2,600 and the 5 m Deluxe at $3,050.
