Located in Georgia, public Bonaventure Cemetery became famous in 1994, when it was featured in John Berendt’s novel ‘Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’ and in the movie directed by Clint Eastwood, which is also based on the book.
The cemetery lies on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, becoming a public cemetery in 1907.
With an area of 160 acres, Bonaventure Cemetery is home to several notable figures, including novelist and poet Conrad Aiken, actress Edythe Chapman, singer Johnny Mercer, actor James Neill and Civil War Army officer and Confederate general Hugh W. Mercer.
Designed in Southern Gothic style, Bonaventure Cemetery is open to the public daily, from 8 AM to 5 PM.
